Team tryouts are held at the beginning of each Fall semester. All levels of strength and lifting experience are encouraged to tryout!
Picture
Team practice times are Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursday from 5:30pm-8:00pm. Please schedule classes around those practice times or let us know if you have a required course during those time periods.

There is no formal Spring semester tryout period. If you wish to tryout at any point past the initial Fall tryout period, please contact a team officer. Certain prerequisites in strength level and lifting experience must be met to tryout past the initial period.

Requirements

Tryouts

  1. Full-time LSU Student (graduate students also accepted)
  2. Have and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A
  3. Be in good academic standing
  4. Be no older than 25
  • A two-week period in which you will come before team practice time on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday to train.
  • You will be taught proper lifting technique and form to ensure your health and safety.
  • At the end of the two-week period, you will perform 3-rep maxes on each lift and be evaluated on four main criteria: Strength, Dedication, Coachability and Team Player.

Criteria

Strength is key for any successful powerlifting team. We will accept people at varying strengths and varying levels of lifting experience. Strength does have a high emphasis in the evaluation process, however. Strength will be determined during 3-rep maxes and/or previous documented maxes.

Dedication to both lifting and fellow LSU Powerlifting members is required. During tryouts, there will be specific tryout times and voluntary team events. Attendance is not mandatory, however, not attending may lead to a low dedication score during evaluations.

The ability to be coached goes a long way in gaining strength. Throughout tryouts, team officers will offer suggestions on lifting technique and form. Coachabilty will be evaluated on how lifters react and apply those suggestions to their lifting. Inability to listen to and apply suggestions from our experienced powerlifters will result in a low score.

Our practices are very fast paced and space gets extremely limited. Being a good team player mainly involves having good gym awareness and respect towards others. Attentiveness towards spotting fellow lifters, changing weights, and being courteous to people in the process of lifting shows high gym awareness. Respect is something LSU Powerlifting holds in high regard. We believe in respect towards other members and to anyone who encounters one of our members. Disrespectful or ignorant speech/behavior will not be tolerated by any members on any occasion.  All members are expected to handle disagreements and confrontations in an adult manner.

EVALUATIONS

At the end of the two week period, tryout attendees will be invited to discuss the results of their evaluations with the team officers. Each attendee will leave evaluations knowing whether they made the team or not.

Each person who fails to make the team is encouraged to continue lifting and to return to tryout in the future. Most cuts in the tryout process are due to limited space and resources. The LSU UREC, where we practice, has recently finished a large expansion project. LSU Powerlifting now has a larger practice area which will likely lead to an increased number of annual members! members

Each member is required to pay team dues each fall and spring semester. These dues go towards team expenses such as, travel, competition fees, federation fees, etc. Practice times are currently Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30pm-8:00pm. Voluntary workouts are scheduled at the lifters leisure on Fridays.

If you’re interested in being part of a friendly, championship seeking atmosphere, please email us at lsupowerlifting@tigers.lsu.edu with the subject “Public Liason” and please inform us of your weight class and maxes (if any) with any additional awards or achievements you have received. We will send you an informational packet with additional information.
